The Goodwell Magnetic Mount 🚗

The Goodwell magnetic vent mount, machined from anodised aluminium, with a ring of neodymium magnets behind a soft silicone face so it grips without marking your phone or case. In the box: the mount with its padded vent clip, a slim steel plate and an adhesive pad. No clamps, no arms, no springs to wear out. Fit it once and forget it.

NO CLAMPS. NO ARMS. NO FUSS.

Clamp mounts make you use two hands. You pull the jaws apart, line the phone up, ease it in without catching the volume button, then do the whole thing in reverse when you arrive. It is a fiddly little ritual you repeat every single journey, and it is exactly the sort of thing people end up doing while the car is moving.

A magnet removes the ritual. You bring the phone close and let go. It is already mounted.

There is a second advantage that only shows up over time: there is nothing here to wear out. No spring to soften, no plastic jaw to crack, no gripper arm that stops holding after a hot summer on the dashboard.

PORTRAIT, LANDSCAPE, ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN

Because the phone is held by a flat magnetic face rather than gripped at the edges, orientation stops being a decision you make when you dock it. Turn the phone with a fingertip and it stays where you put it — upright for a map, sideways for a longer view of the road ahead.

The ball joint underneath handles the rest: tilt it up toward your eye line, or angle it away from the sun.

And because nothing clamps the sides, your charging cable, buttons and side switches all stay clear.

WHY IT DOESN'T LET GO

The whole design is built around one question: what actually makes a magnetic mount fail?

  • A ring of neodymium magnets, not a single central slug — the pull is spread across the plate instead of pivoting on one point
  • A steel plate sized to sit under the middle of a large phone, so the grip doesn't depend on where your case is thickest
  • A soft silicone face over the magnet, so the phone can't rattle against metal on a rough surface
  • A padded, spring-loaded vent clip that grips the slat rather than resting on it
  • Machined aluminium body and a ball joint with real friction — the two parts that usually go floppy first

What that adds up to on the road: the phone stays put over expansion joints, speed bumps and the sort of pothole that makes you wince.

STEP #1 — CLIP IT IN

Pick a horizontal vent slat where the phone won't cover your instruments, and press the padded clip on until it sits firm. Takes about five seconds and leaves nothing behind when you take it off.

STEP #2 — ADD THE PLATE

Either stick the steel plate centred on the back of the phone, or — the tidier option — slide it inside your case so it never shows. Centred matters more than neat: off-centre is what makes a phone sag.

STEP #3 — DRIVE

Bring the phone close and let go. Snap on, twist to the orientation you want, pull it straight off when you park. One hand, without looking away from the road.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

The Goodwell mount is three parts, and that is deliberate — every extra hinge is another thing to rattle.

  • The mount: anodised aluminium head with a ring of neodymium magnets behind a soft silicone face, on a friction ball joint
  • The vent clip: padded and spring-loaded, so it holds the slat without scratching or splaying it
  • A slim steel plate plus an adhesive pad, for the back of your phone or the inside of your case

No cables, no charging, no app, no battery to remember. It is a magnet and a clip, made properly.

WHAT DRIVERS SAY ABOUT THE GOODWELL MOUNT

★★★★★
Had a spring-clamp one before that eventually stopped gripping and dropped the phone into the footwell on a roundabout. This just holds. Two months of a truly awful commute and it has not moved.
DDave R.
★★★★★
Plate went inside my case so you can't see it at all. Snapping the phone on without looking is the whole point — I do it now the same way I do a seatbelt.
AAisha F.
★★★★
Solid hold and a proper metal build, not the creaky plastic I expected at this price. One note: get the plate properly centred first time. Mine was slightly off and the phone leaned until I redid it.
MMartin O.
★★★★★
Bought it for the rotation. I drive for a living and being able to flick the map sideways at a junction without unclipping anything is worth more than it sounds.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Will it hold a big phone in a thick case?
In most cases yes — the magnets pull through a typical silicone, plastic or leather case. What weakens the hold is distance and metal: a very thick or armoured case, a wallet case with cards in it, or a case with a metal plate of its own. If yours is one of those, put the steel plate inside the case rather than on the outside of it.
Does it work with MagSafe?
If your phone or case already has a built-in magnet ring, it will usually snap straight on without the steel plate. If it doesn't hold as firmly as you'd like, use the plate — that's what it's there for.
Will the magnet damage my phone?
No. Phones use solid-state storage, which magnets don't affect, and the magnet sits behind a soft silicone face so nothing rubs. Keep credit cards and hotel key cards away from it, though — magnetic stripes genuinely do wipe.
Will it damage my air vent?
The clip is padded and spring-loaded, so it grips the slat rather than biting into it, and it comes off cleanly. Pick a sturdy horizontal slat — very thin, delicate or round vanes hold any vent mount less well, and on those the adhesive pad on a flat dash area is the better option.
Where do I put the steel plate?
Centred on the back of the phone, or slid inside the case so it never shows. Centred matters more than tidy — an off-centre plate is the usual reason a phone sags on a magnetic mount. Clean the surface first if you're sticking it directly on.
